How Aspire Law Works With Charities and Rehabilitation Providers

Getting a fair compensation settlement matters enormously after a spinal cord injury.

Spinal injury charity

But for most people, the practical and emotional demands of life after injury extend well beyond what any legal process can address on its own.

Aspire Law was built around that understanding. Its work with spinal cord injury charities and rehabilitation providers reflects a commitment that goes well beyond the legal process, and that does not end when a case closes.

The Foundation: Aspire Law and Aspire the Charity

Aspire Law was created as a joint venture between Moore Blatch solicitors and Aspire, the national spinal cord injury charity, forming a social enterprise model that places clients’ needs at the centre of its work.

Fifty per cent of the firm’s profits go directly to Aspire, which uses those funds to deliver practical services to people living with spinal cord injuries, including those who are not in a position to pursue a compensation claim at all.

For a spinal injury charity, the ability to draw on sustained funding from a commercial partner makes a tangible difference to the scope of services it can offer. Those funds support Aspire’s housing programme, which provides accessible accommodation to patients being discharged from hospital who would otherwise have nowhere suitable to live, its welfare and benefits advice service, and a grant-giving scheme that helps people with spinal cord injuries afford specialist equipment.

Aspire’s Independent Living Advisors are a team of individuals who have personally experienced spinal cord injuries. They provide guidance, practical advice, and emotional support to newly injured patients and their families in NHS spinal injury centres across the UK to help them plan for life after hospital discharge

The Spinal Injuries Association

Aspire Law is the Trusted Legal Partner for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) in London and the Northeast and is one of its Business Member Partners.

The SIA supports people affected by spinal cord injury with expert information, advice, and a wide range of direct services, and the partnership with Aspire Law reflects a shared purpose in how those people are supported.

The relationship runs deeper than a formal designation. James Wood, senior associate at Aspire Law, is a trustee of the SIA and Raquel Siganporia, Associate Director at Aspire Law, previously had a trustee role. That level of involvement in the charity’s governance over many years shaped the firm’s understanding of what the SCI community needs from the organisations around it.

The firm has also contributed actively to SIA fundraising, with colleagues participating in the London Marathon to raise funds for the association’s work.

Back Up: Mentoring, Skills and a Shared Legal Panel

Aspire Law sponsors the mentoring programme run by Back Up and sits on its Legal Panel, providing specialist legal services to individuals referred through the charity.

Back Up’s services span wheelchair skills training, return-to-work support, independence courses, and a mentoring programme that connects people newly affected by spinal cord injury with those who have lived with it for longer. The charity also supports children with spinal cord injuries and their families.

Horatio’s Garden

Horatio’s Garden creates and maintains accessible gardens within NHS spinal injury centres across the UK, providing therapeutic spaces for patients and their families during inpatient stays.

Aspire Law has funded the arts programme at the Salisbury garden, and staff volunteer at Horatio’s Garden sites. Raquel Siganporia serves as an Ambassador for the charity.

The support for Horatio’s Garden reflects an awareness that the experience of being in a spinal injury centre, often for many months, is something that affects people far beyond their clinical needs. Creative and environmental engagement during that period has real value, and backing a charity that delivers it is one way the firm’s commitment to the SCI community takes shape outside of legal work.

Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research

Aspire Law sponsors community events and seminars/webinars run by Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research.

Raquel Siganporia acts as a panellist at Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research events for newly injured people, contributing both legal and personal insight to discussions that matter most at that early stage. A colleague also took part in the Superhero Triathlon to raise funds for the organisation’s research work.

MASCIP (Multidisciplinary Association of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals)

The firm also supports MASCIP, the national professional forum for clinical staff working in spinal cord injury, through sponsorship and collaboration.

MASCIP promotes standards in clinical practice and supports the development of health and social care services for people with SCI.

The quality of clinical care in this field bears directly on the lives of the people Aspire Law represents, and engaging with the professional body that works to raise those standards is a natural part of the firm’s broader involvement in the SCI community.

Support That Goes Beyond the Settlement

A compensation claim, where one is available, can fund rehabilitation, care, housing adaptations, and specialist equipment. Interim payments can bring some of that support forward, making a real difference to someone’s situation before a case reaches settlement. But the support that charities, mentors, peer networks, and therapeutic programmes provide runs alongside all of that, and continues long after a legal file is closed.

Aspire Law’s approach recognises that distinction. Its partnerships with spinal cord injury charities and rehabilitation providers are active, long-standing, and grounded in direct participation rather than logo placement.

For clients, that means access to a network of support that extends into housing, benefits, independence skills, peer connection, and wellbeing. Each spinal injury charity the firm works with addresses a different aspect of life after injury, and together they form part of what Aspire Law believes good support in this field actually looks like.
