Independent Living Advisors (ILAs)

Independent Living Advisors are a service provided by Aspire which is a charity supporting those with a spinal cord injury. Independent Living Advisors provide guidance to people coming to terms with a spinal cord injury. All advisors live with a spinal cord injury themselves, allowing them to relate to the fears and life transitions patients and their families are facing.

There is an Independent Living Advisor in every spinal cord injury centre across the UK, where they work closely with NHS teams to ensure patients’ questions are answered. Each session with an advisor is ultimately geared to helping people plan for greater independence when rehabilitation and their hospital stay is over.

Advisors can help answer questions related to accessible housing, transportation (including Motability), going on holiday and access to sports and leisure, as well as general insights on living with a disability. They can also signpost you to other advisors or even ask questions on your behalf.

Aspire Law is very proud to sponsor this vital service. We’ve seen first-hand how beneficial this peer support system is to newly diagnosed patients with a life-changing spinal cord injury, and the difference it makes to people’s outcomes.
