Aspire Law and Back Up Join Forces
We’re pleased to announce that Aspire Law has joined forces with Back Up, one of the ‘big three’ spinal cord injury charities in the UK (alongside SIA and Aspire). Aspire Law is supporting Back Up’s accredited mentoring programme - a brilliant service which matches people with a spinal cord injury and their family members with trained volunteer mentors who have been in a similar situation.
James Wood, Solicitor and Managing Director at Aspire Law, had this to say when he delivered news of this exciting partnership:
"We are delighted to be working with and sponsoring Back Up's Mentoring Service. Ensuring support for the SCI community is a central tenet to what we do at Aspire Law. For the past three years, we have supported (and continue to support), Aspire's Independent Living Advisors who work in Spinal Injury Centres throughout the UK. Being able to extend support for SCI persons beyond the Centres into the community is fantastic - and we are very pleased to support Back Up with this invaluable service."
The Significance of SCI Support for Individuals and Families
A strong support network is an essential part of adjusting to major life changes. Emotional, psychological and social adjustment can quite often be overshadowed by the medical and physiological impact of a spinal cord injury.
Family members can find it hard to adjust: close relationships can be strained by a lack of communication - and the tension can build over time into frustration. Anyone whose life has been affected by spinal cord injury, either directly or by the injury of a family member, will be on a long journey - one that, at least at times, can be an isolating experience.
It doesn’t have to be a lonely journey. Each individual and every family is different, but the impact of having a mentor can be profound. Knowing the path is different to taking it - having someone on the other side, who has lived through an experience like yours, is a huge advantage.
The importance of contact, communication and support for every life touched by SCI can’t be overstated - and Aspire Law is proud to be supporting Back Up, their mentors and the SCI community.
About the Mentor Service
Back Up’s mentors are volunteers who give their time to the charity. Each volunteer mentor is fully trained and has personal experience of spinal cord injury - either their own first-hand experience, or that of an immediate family member. Back Up’s mentoring service is open to people of all ages and injury levels.
Mentors work over the phone or face-to-face, providing up to ten sessions.
