In May 2023, Aspire Law renewed its commitment to supporting the Back Up Family Mentoring Service, which assists individuals and families navigating the challenges of spinal cord injuries (SCI). This generous sponsorship has played a pivotal role in transforming lives, ensuring that those affected by SCI
do not face this devastating journey alone.
The Family Mentoring Programme
The Family Mentoring programme, backed by Aspire Law, provides crucial peer mentoring for individuals with a family member who has sustained a spinal cord injury. Trained family mentors offer support, advice, and coaching to guide families through positive changes in their lives after the injury of their loved
one.
Challenges and Successes
Despite challenges arising from pressures on health services impacting spinal rehabilitation, Back Up has proactively addressed the gaps in provision. The Outreach team expansion has allowed for a more regular presence in spinal units, fostering relationships with various hospitals. This approach has resulted
in increased mentoring referrals, enabling the organisation to meet the growing needs of newly injured individuals and their families.
Back Up Family Mentoring Impact
The Family Mentoring Service directly engages with family members in the early days following their loved one’s SCI, creating a personalized ‘Family Plan’ to guide them towards a positive adjustment. In the past year, Back Up witnessed a 77% increase in family members registering for their services, with
an overwhelming 96% reporting that life with SCI is more manageable due to Back Up’s support.
The Impact Made Possible
The commitment and support from Aspire Law has paved the way for significant achievements in the Back Up Family Mentoring Service. In the first six months of this year, 39 family members were matched with peer mentors, representing a 21% increase compared to the previous year. The impact is evident in the diverse goals pursued by mentees, from addressing practical issues like medication and equipment to seeking emotional support and understanding the journey ahead.
Testimonials and Achievements
The testimonials from mentees speak volumes about the positive impact of the mentoring program. Individuals have found solace in discussing possibilities, such as acquiring a Radar key for disabled toilets or contemplating future activities like attending festivals. The achievements are tangible, with 100% of family mentees achieving their personal goals in the last quarter, surpassing the target of 90%.
Additionally, 100% demonstrated improvement in at least five positive coping measures, reinforcing the program’s effectiveness. Aspire Law’s continued sponsorship of the Back Up Family Mentoring Service exemplifies a commitment to making a lasting impact on the lives of those affected by spinal cord injuries. Together with Back Up, we are not only achieving milestones but also fostering hope, resilience, and a sense of community for individuals and families on their journey to recovery.
