Aspire Law wins Alternative Business Structure of the Year at The Lawyer Awards

ABS award 2015

Aspire Law, a partnership between Aspire, a national spinal injury charity, and Moore Blatch, a firm renowned for its personal injury work, has won Alternative Business Structure of the Year at The Lawyer Awards.

The ceremony which took place yesterday evening saw over 1,200 legal professionals gather at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel in London to celebrate the industry’s successes over the past 12 months.

The category of Alternative Business Structure of the Year had six finalists in total but despite tough competition, Aspire Law was awarded the winner.

Damian Horan, Legal Director at Aspire Law comments:

“We are delighted to have won this award, which not only recognises the hard work put in by the whole team, but also a new and innovative approach to Spinal Cord Injury work that Aspire Law is able to offer. This is an excellent start for the business, which is still in its first year of operation and provides a solid base to continue to build from.”

Aspire Law operates under an alternative business structure licence, made possible by the Legal Services Act, which enables law practices to go into businesses with other organisations and non-lawyers, to own and invest in a law firm.

Before agreeing on the structure of the business, considerable research was completed into client experiences, expectations and concerns around legal claims resulting from spinal injuries. The feedback received directly influenced the final business model.

Damian continues:

“We believe Aspire Law provides genuine competition within the market and combines strong legal expertise with charitable values, putting the needs of those with Spinal Cord Injury above all else.”

Unlike many other providers, the business is dedicated solely to Spinal Cord Injury work and, as well as using lawyers with a strong track record for securing the best compensation for clients, it will also benefit from Aspire’s considerable knowledge of providing services for spinally injured people. The result will be a service that will tackle every issue arising from Spinal Cord Injury including; housing, education, care and rehabilitation, as well as emotional and family support.

Under the social enterprise model created by Aspire and Moore Blatch, the charity will receive 50% of profits to re-invest into the work it does for those with spinal cord injury. This work includes its housing programme for those discharged from hospital who otherwise would have nowhere suitable to live; and its grant-giving scheme to help people obtain specialist equipment.

Since its official launch in late 2014, Aspire has successfully built relationships across the UK and now represents clients nationally; the firm is now looking to increase headcount and office space to service its growing client base.

Over the next three years, Aspire Law has aspirations to become recognised as the specialist go to provider for all Spinal Cord Injury compensation claims and this award win marks another step towards this goal.

The Lawyer Awards are held annually in June and are a prestigious accolade in the legal calendar; the awards acknowledge a range of expertise in the legal profession, identifying leaders in their field.
